To look at Dalí’s Transparent Horse is not enough; it requires staring. Close examination.
Well, that certainly was my experience of it when I had the pleasure of seeing it in person.
I saw this piece when I was quite young, way before I ever knew that I wanted to be a visual artist. Access to, or interest in, the visual arts was something that eluded me up until the age of about 17. I come from the performing arts world, so I had no real understanding of the subtle, and not so subtle, language of paintings. The way they speak to you, and you have no idea how, is just magic.
This piece bypassed my logical mind and went straight to the creative heart. All the little brush strokes. All the movement. All the life of the artist himself so visible in his work, you feel like it’s your own.
An hour in front of this piece went by in the blink of an eye, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since.
